About 400 people attended Jack Myers' Memorial to celebrate his love for family,
poetry, and life. Willard Spiegelman was the Master of Ceremonies, and we heard
Jack's poems read by Paul Christensen, Gillian Conoley, Tony Hoagland, and Rick
Jackson. The Eulogy was given by Mark Cox and Ralph Angel, and remembrances by
Jack's brother, Marshall (Monk) Myers (who also played jazz); his cousin David Akiba;
Bonnie Wheeler; Marshall Terry; Brian Clements; and Joe Ahearn.  An original composition,
Elegy, was performed by Jack's son Ben and daughter-in-law Hsiu-Hui on cello and
piano respectively.

John Doty & Beatriz Terrazas are putting together a complete DVD of the service
and retrospective, but in the meantime, here is a link to a wonderful video tribute
by Jack's sister, Ellen Myers Fontana (click here [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1103009039950&s=4558&e=001rZxKGx4k1adRmXOXxSPYmzfyTat2JaANQp_2e9249H5TK9hYvpfSWzzlpgaaw60kkXx-ur5UwsaVRTxN78rbbINM1YWDXl4WNdjTkNVj1tvLDFjgLfUK_n2lYPPEMdBcdKD2LDNYn9bfGYCQYYYH08zTIfOBuol2VL_QO4MgjT1nxY6PE84XXDVEiZmu97C6os5_RwwwA-o=]),

We're also looking for past students of Jack's (either directly or self-directed)
to help facilitate a special year-long Poetry Stone Soup beginning in March. We
may alternate facilitators, have guest poets, etc., but want to base one session
each month on a chapter from the Portable Poetry Workshop and follow the assignments
to critique the following session. The idea is to keep Jack's wonderful teaching
alive as well as his poetry.

If you are interested in helping with this project, please email jmyers@smu.edu

to Jack.

Writers Wanted
to help"Spread the Word"

to young readers and writers
Writers will work directly with educators and school children in the Dallas-Fort
Worth metroplex following a paid apprenticeship training. These are part-time contract
positions for reliable, practicing writers with a strong understanding of the interplay
of reading and writing and its impact on the educational experience. MANY are in
the innercity or "tough" communities with the greatest need.
We are especially interested in writers with past teaching experience; knowledge
of TEKS / TAKS; appreciation of reading and writing across the curriculum; interdisciplinary
talents in other arts, science, history, geography, and / or math; training in ESL;
fluency in Spanish; and the ability to work well with others.

*Can you help save two
orphaned exotic birds?
This is not the kind of newsletter pitch we generally do, so please don't start
sending us pictures of lost dogs or garage sale notices, but Jack Myers' daughter-in-law,
Theresa, used to be our partner at The MAC when she was their director, and was
ALSO our Art Editor for TEX Magazine, and the Myers family has been through a great
deal this year. Just days before Jack's memorial, she lost her brother Darell, a
gentle and generous soul who raised and loved Macaws. His departure left two young
Macaws orphaned and in need of a good home (they are emotionally bonded and must
be kept together). Their pictures are at the top of this e-letter.

Normally, these two tropical birds together with their cages would sell for more
than $4000 complete, but Theresa wants a good home for Rory & Jasper (a scarlet
macaw and military macaw--both very young), and so will let them both go with their
expensive cages for only $1200.
If you are interested, please contact Theresa Jones Myers theresalmyers@gmail.com
