Hard times are good for philanthropy: Local charities report a boom in volunteerism

At a time when thousands of Central Texans are looking for jobs, many recently unemployed people with more time on their hands are volunteering their services to nonprofits. Over the past year, monthly volunteer hours donated to the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas have jumped 42 percent. Austin Travis County Integral Care, formerly the Austin Travis County Mental Health Mental Retardation Center, has seen a 64 percent increase in volunteers since last year.
