The H.E. Butt Grocery Co. will donate $75,000 to the Capital Area Food Bank in a formal check presentation Tuesday. The money was raised in May and June through the grocery store's annual Help End Hunger campaign, which allowed customers to add $1, $3 or $5 coupons for the food bank to their grocery bill. Statewide, the effort raised $327,500 for 18 food banks.
The grocery store will also commemorate the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks today as more than 1,000 Central Texas H-E-B employees visit 143 area fire stations, providing home-cooked meals and performing service and maintenance projects. Employees from more than 74 H-E-B stores, along with administrative offices and Central Market, will serve breakfast and lunch and perform chores such as yard work and station and equipment cleaning.
The effort is part of the store's Helping Heroes program, which honors fire departments and other civil servants.
