Texas City gets $90M
Around Texas

June, 2009

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler on Thursday announced at least $90 million in investments in the next five years that he said could trigger an upscale commercial boom for areas surrounding the campus.

Among the investments is $42 million in the first phase of construction for a new academic center. The University of Texas M.D Anderson Cancer Center in Houston is involved in the design and planning of the 85,000-square-foot modern cancer treatment facility, but Dr. Kirk Calhoun declined to say whether UTHSC Tyler's signage soon will include M.D. Anderson's logo.

State lawmakers this spring set aside $1.46 million for the health science center to pay for costs associated with providing health care and surgical procedures to state inmates and evacuees from the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Ike, state Rep. Tommy Merritt, R-Longview said. Merritt's district includes Gregg and northern Smith County, including the UT Health Science Center between Tyler and Winona.
