Economic lessons with a deeper twist
I think we all need to look at the world with different eyes. Most people try to measure success or failure by looking at the economics of a situation - trying to find answers by studying numbers - even though numbers can tell half the story. Many times we need to look beneath the surface for the real reasons why things are happening in society today.
Clever young social economists Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, the authors of Freakonomics, observe things in a different way....looking for spicy motivation behind all sorts of behavior. They think about and observe circumstances in order to look at them in a very thoughtful way.
For example, we talk about good parenting every day - but Levitt tells us that a day-care center fined parents $3 per child when they showed up late to pick up their children. Of course, they hoped this would encourage parents to come on time....while in fact, the number of parents showing up late doubled when parents legitimized the cost as "parents could buy off their guilt."
And Levitt hands Jane Roe (of Roe vs. Wade) credit for reducing the number of millions of potential criminals born into America today. His research showed that legalized abortion led to less unwanted children that would be born into poverty and destitution - which ultimately (2 decades later) led to less crime. In fact, he says it had far greater impact than even gun control or the improved economy. Although this is shocking - it seems to be valid.
So remember, it’s not always wise to jump too fast – wait, watch and think. Don't look for quick answers...or make snap decisions - sometimes it is good to look deeper.

Interesting theories (I imagine there are a lot more available from this group)...
While I was shaking my head in agreement with your opening statements regarding the day care situation, I started to really think about it and came up with a slightly different slant to this... I don't think that parents are necessarily "buying off their guilt" as much as they were given permission to leave the kids there late. Parents are more inclined to get there on time thinking that if they are late a few times, the day care will give their kids the boot. By offering a "fine" for being late, parents can weigh the value of leaving the kids there a few extra minutes in monetary terms. Being fined vs. Being expelled (no guilt there). :)
With regards to the shocking crime reduction statement... without looking at the true research numbers, my instincts tell me that the poverty stricken individuals in this country aren't the ones getting abortions. It's the more affluent and the middle class that seem to get the abortions. I've never seen numbers that show there has been any sort of decline in the number of children being born into poverty. If anything, I think I've read that those numbers continue to climb. Since I have no concrete evidence to back up my statements, I'll reserve any additional comments on their claim.
I will say this... I do believe that in order to make a change in this society, you have to be able to view things from all sides... even if it's shocking in its nature. We have to do more investigating and less labeling if we ever want to make positive changes in our world.
I do agree that we all should entertain ideas with a more open mind. There are so many variables, as you mentioned, to be considered before we judge.
